Diplodocus Facts

Diplodocus was a giant sauropod dinosaur that lived in North America during the late Jurassic period, between approximately 155 million and 145 million years ago. The animal was typically around 85 feet (26 meters) long, but some grew as large as 100 feet (31 meters) long.

Diplodocus can be distinguished from other sauropods such as Apatosaurus (sometimes also known as "Brontosaurus") and Brachiosaurus, by its relatively light build. Diplodocus weighed only around 11 tons, which perhaps only about one third of the weight of Apatosaurus, and about only one eight of the weight of a Brachiosaurus. Additionally, Diplodocus has a comparatively long neck (about 46 feet), very long tail (about 46 feet), but short body (13 feet long) and tiny head (2 feet long).

Fossil

During life, Diplodocus was a herbivore (plant eater). It was once thought that Diplodocus held its head up high, but today many scientists believe that Diplodocus probably kept its head relatively close to the ground. Support for this position comes from arguments about Diplodocus' heart (some scientists believe it would not have been strong enough to pump blood to the brain via an upright neck), and the shape of the animal's neck vertebrae.

Diplodocus Facts

The first fossil skeleton of Diplodocus was found in 1878 by Benjamin Mudge and Samuel Wendell Williston, and this specimen was named by Othniel C. Marsh. Interestingly enough, Marsh thought that Diplodocus may have been aquatic - he based this opinion on the position of nasal openings in Diplodocus' skull. Today however, the aquatic theory is not so widely held - and many scientists now think Diplodocus was a land-based herbivore that grazed plants at ground level.

How to Build a Bar

A bar is a significant home area especially for wine enthusiasts. If you are keeping a collection and you want to build a space in your house to store and display your wines in style, you must pay serious attention in this article on how to build a bar.

How to build a bar project should start by defining a place in your house that you think it would be best located. While a bar does not require a specific space or room to be in, you must be careful in choosing the perfect spot. Of course, you would like a space that will allow you to entertain your guests, give you a relaxing 'you' moment, and have enough room to carry all the items that you wish to put into your bar.

Refurbish

After finding the perfect place, it is time for you to choose and purchase the materials that you will need and learn the ropes of how to build a bar. If you do not have the money to spend on built-in bars that can be bought in home design stores, you must be keen on learning how to build a bar. Unlike the common impression, building a bar is not that difficult. You just need to remember a couple of things:

How to Build a Bar

Tip #1: How to build a bar perfectly requires serious attention to detail. Be precise with the measurements. It is advisable that you keep a construction plan at hand while you are building your br. This will serve as your guide in putting things together the most stylish way possible, with lots of considerations to comfort and convenience.

Tip #2: Make an assessment of the items or appliances that you would need to put into your bar area. A wine refrigerator is of course, a must, especially if you are keen on keeping your wine collection at their best even after a long while. Shelves for your other collection of alcoholic beverages as well as bar stools and wine glasses are also required.

Tip #3: Make sure that your bar design does not destroy or spoil your household theme. Wherever you may be putting the bar area, it is important that you mind the design details. It can be different from the other home areas but definitely not damaging to the ongoing theme.

Tip #4: Never forget a smooth finish. The finishing touches to your bar is an integral part of its overall appeal.

Smog and Acid Rain

Particularly for large metropolitan cities, smog and poor air quality is a pressing environmental problem. Smog primarily consists of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds chemically interacting with heat from sunlight forming ground level ozone. Smog is that familiar haze most commonly found surrounding large cities, particularly in the summer time. Smog and ground level ozone contribute to all kinds of respiratory problems ranging from temporary discomfort, asthma, to long-lasting, permanent lung damage. The pollutants in smog come from vehicle emissions, smokestack emissions, paints, and solvents - most of which started out as crude oil.

Much of the eastern United States is affected by another environmental problem known as acid rain. Acid rain can damage crops, forests, wildlife populations, and cause respiratory and other illnesses in humans. When sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides react with water vapor and other chemicals in the presence of sunlight, various acidic compounds form in the air and come to the earth as acid rain. The pollutants of acid rain are derived from coal fired power plants. Natural gas emits virtually no sulfur dioxide and up to 80 percent less nitrogen oxides than the combustion of coal. So the increased use of natural gas would provide for fewer acid rain causing emissions.

Fossil

The source of energy to use for reducing pollution and maintaining a clean and healthy environment is natural gas. Natural gas is also domestically abundant making it a secure source of energy. The environmental benefits of using natural gas over other sources of energy, particularly other fossil fuels are numerous.

Smog and Acid Rain

Since the use of natural gas emits only low levels of nitrogen oxides and virtually no particulate matter, it can be used to help combat smog formation in those areas where ground level air quality is poor. Electric utilities, motor vehicles, and industrial plants make up the main sources of nitrogen oxides. To combat smog production, especially in urban centers where it is needed the most, increased natural gas use in the electric generation sector, a shift to cleaner natural gas vehicles, and increased industrial natural gas use could all serve to improving the air quality. Summertime, when natural gas demand is at its lowest and smog problems are the greatest, would be a good time for industrial plants and electric generators to use natural gas to fuel their operations instead of using the more polluting fossil fuels. This would effectively reduce smog emissions resulting in clearer, healthier air around the urban centers.

A study conducted in 1995 by the Coalition for Gas-Based Environmental Solutions found that in the Northeast, smog and ozone-causing emissions could be reduced by 50 to 70 percent through the seasonal switching to natural gas.

Particulate emissions such as soot, ash, metals, and other airborne particles also cause the degradation of air quality in the United States. Natural gas emits virtually no particulates into the atmosphere. Emissions of particulates from natural gas combustion are 90 percent lower than from the combustion of oil, and 99 percent lower than burning coal. Increased natural gas use in place of other dirtier hydrocarbons can help to reduce particulate emissions in the United States.

Companies like Triple Diamond Energy Corporation are concerned about the levels of smog and acid rain. They look at increasing their supply of the more environmentally beneficial natural gas and to make it more accessible to the northeastern part of the United States.

Natural Gas Properties

Natural gas is a gaseous fossil fuel that has methane as its primary compound. It is derived from organic material that was deposited or buried under the earth, millions of years ago. It contains heavier gaseous hydrocarbons, like ethane propane, and butane as well as sulphur containing gases. Natural gas has certain properties that enable its use for industrial or domestic purpose. For instance, it contains non-poisonous ingredients that when inhaled gets absorbed into the blood.

Natural gas is tasteless and colorless and when mixed with the requisite volume of air and ignited, it burns with a clean, blue flame. It is considered one of the cleanest burning fuels, producing primarily heat, carbon dioxide and water vapor. Natural gas is odorless and before it is distributed to end-users, it is odorized by adding thiols, which also helps in detecting any leakage. Natural gas is lighter than air, and tends to disperse into the atmosphere. In a confined state within a house, gas concentrations can reach explosive mixtures and when ignited, it causes great hazard to life and property.

Fossil

Natural gas has a peculiar characteristic of igniting only when there is an air-and-gas mixture and the percent of natural gas is between 5 and 15 percent. A mixture containing less than 5 percent or greater than 15 percent of natural gas would not ignite. Natural gas contains small quantities of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, sulfur components and water. Liquefaction is a process involving cooling and condensing of natural gas that removes the non-methane components such as carbon dioxide and sulfur. It leads to the formation of an extremely pure, clean-burning product that is efficient to transport and store.

Natural Gas Properties

Natural gas is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel available that leads to a cleaner environment. In places dominated by polluting energy sources, natural gas helps improve the quality of air and water. Natural gas burns to produce no harmful pollutants and is a highly reliable fuel for cooking.

The Earth Getting Warmer

Different people have different opinions on global warming. According to some, it is a theory, while others say it a proven set of facts. But the truth is that global warming is not a theory any more it becomes a fact. Due to the increase in the average temperature level of the earth, the world is getting warmer day by day. The Depletion of the Earth's Ozone layer has resulted in the Ultra Violet Radiation reaching the surface of the earth which increases temperature of the earth.

Due to the global warming our whole ecosystem is going through a drastic change. But this change is not positive change. It is not the result of any single reason, infact it is the amalgamation of many reasons. One of the prime reasons of global warming is Carbon Dioxide emissions. These Carbon Dioxide emissions are the result of power plants. The power plants use burning coal, natural gas and diesel fuel for their production purpose and when these pollutants are loosen in the air, they increase the level of pollution in the air and which helps in increasing this problem.

Fossil

Global warming is affecting both environment and human beings altogether. Every living being on this earth is getting affected by it. According to the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, "most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in (human greenhouse gas) concentrations". It is predicted that life of living beings on this earth will depends on the level of warming.

The Earth Getting Warmer

According to the National Academy of Sciences, the average surface temperature of the earth has risen by one degree Fahrenheit (°F) during the past 100 years, with accelerated warming occurring within the past 20 years.

At present the problem of warming has become a burning issue. But only discussing about it and its effects on earth and our lives is not going to save us from its effects. Therefore, in order to reduce warming we can take some small but necessary action towards it. We can reduce this problem in many ways.

As we all know that burning fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, oil and gasoline increase the level of carbon dioxide which contributes to a major level the greenhouse effect and global warming. Therefore, by reducing the demand for fossil fuels and using energy more wisely we can contribute towards the reduction. Moreover planting trees, buying energy efficient products, saving electricity by switching off the lights etc. are the ways to reduce global warming.

Electricity Today

The energy sources used to generate electricity varies, but the principle behind it is very similar. Energy is used to rotate huge turbines that are connected to massive generators which in turn produce the electricity.

Today's major electric companies rely on two major energy sources; fossil fuel and hydro power. To produce electricity from coal, huge furnaces with water is heated using coal as fuel. The steam produced from the boiling furnace drives the turbine to produce electricity. Coal has been the number one source of energy to produce electricity for centuries. However, due to the fact that it is a non renewable source of energy, makes it an unreliable energy source for the long run. Someday coal would run out leaving us with no electricity. Plus, fossil fuel contributes most of the pollution we have today. Using coal as a source of energy for producing electricity is no longer a good method.

Fossil

Hydro power offers clean reliable source of energy it currently contributes most of the electricity we use today. Huge dams are built near bodies of water such as lakes to control the water flow. The dam serves to purpose. One is to control water flow and prevent flooding, second is to channel the water into the turbines which produce electricity. Hydro power is a much cleaner way to produce electricity. Water being a renewable source of energy will never run out. However some environmentalists still protest about using lakes and other bodies of water as an energy source, as they say that it disrupts the waters flora and fauna.

Electricity Today

Electricity is also produced through nuclear fission. It is a far more productive use of nuclear power compared to nuclear bombs. Today, 14% of the world's energy comes from nuclear power. Heat is produced during a nuclear fission. The intense heat is then used to heat huge furnace with water. The intense pressure from the steam is then used to drive the turbine and produce electricity. Continues research are still done to make this method of electricity production much safer.

Generating electricity from renewable source of energy is easy these days. With so many DIY kits available in the market, anybody can setup their own renewable energy source. Two of the most popular renewable energy sources today are wind and solar power. Solar power is starting to gain popularity these days. Electricity is generated through photovoltaic cells or concentrating solar power. Wind power is also beginning to catch up for producing electricity. Wind turbines are usually located near farm lands since it requires wide open areas to operate. These two energy sources are just a few of the promising renewable energy sources we would be using in the future.

6 Dimensions of Wellness

When most of us think of wellness, we automatically think of physical health. We try to maintain a healthy body and hope that will ward off serious illness in the future. However, while physical health is crucial to good health, wellness has many dimensions beyond the physical. In fact, many experts believe there are 6 dimensions of wellness.

1. Emotional health
Understanding our emotions and finding healthy ways of expressing them is important to emotional health. Learn to accept your limitations and embrace ways to form healthy relationships with others. Maintain a sense of perspective, and learn to control emotions like sadness, anger, or frustration.

Refurbish

2. Spiritual health
Having a purpose in life and feeling that life is meaningful leads to spiritual health. Take some quiet time to discover the morals, ethics, and values that guide your decision making, and try to stick with those during problematic times.

6 Dimensions of Wellness

3. Social health
Maintaining healthy relationships with others leads to a healthier you. Try to learn ways to relate well with others, whether they are family members, coworkers, or friends. Practice communication skills and try to be the kind of friend or spouse you would like to have.

4. Environmental health
A healthier planet leads to healthier inhabitants, so not only should you protect yourself from environmental hazards, such as wearing sunscreen or staying indoors on smoggy days, but you should also look for ways to help the earth's health. Recycle or reuse items that you can, and donate used clothing, cell phones, or old computers to non-profit organizations that can refurbish them, thereby keeping them out of landfills.

5. Intellectual health
You've probably heard of the phrase "use it or lose it." That is particularly true for the brain. As we age, there is a natural progression of a slowing of the brain's functions, but you can combat this by working your brain every day. Keep your mind active with learning, creativity, and problem solving. Read up on current events each day. Paint, draw, or build something with your hands. Take a continuing education course at a local college, or join a book club. Even working a crossword puzzle each day can help to keep the mind active.

6. Physical health
Maintain a healthy body through proper nutrition, exercise, and the avoidance of harmful habits, such as smoking or alcohol abuse. Make sure you exercise at least 30 minutes each day. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, such as those found in olive oil. Visit your dentist regularly, since dental health can affect the rest of your body. Seek medical attention when necessary.

Since our bodies and minds are interrelated, true wellness depends of integrating all of the above factors for a more holistic approach to good health. Monitoring and trying to improve in these 6 areas can lead to a happier, healthier you, which can ward off illnesses or diseases.

Physical health is probably the easiest to monitor. For a baseline of your body's physical health, consider getting a mobile health screening, which is convenient, painless, and non-invasive. You will find information quickly about your risk for heart attack or stroke.

How to Refurbish Your Kitchen Cabinets - No Sweat

The question of how to refurbish your kitchen cabinets has been discussed by millions of home owners online and in my opinion there is no one best way of doing it. This is why it is also not possible to provide you with a comprehensive write-up on this broad subject. I will only provide information that should be enough to get you started.

First, there are many issues to consider before you start. For example, you need to make sure that the cabinets are still all right and need not be replaced. Typically built in kitchen cabinets are made of excellent wood and can last for some time. Just make sure you are comfortable re-working them or else you will be wasting your money and time.

Refurbish

In order to have a look you'll love you need to be aware of the style of home e.g. is it a ranch home or town home. Also ascertain the reasons why you need to refurbish the cabinets. Is it because they are dirty, they have the wrong color or simply tired of them.

How to Refurbish Your Kitchen Cabinets - No Sweat

Do you want to change of maintain the arrangement? Do you need new countertops? These are essential questions that you must have answers for before you start or else you will lose the whole vision and turn your kitchen into a mess you'll despise.

How to refurbish your kitchen cabinets tips
For a brighter effect on the cabinets, consider painting both the inside and outsider with a lighter shade than their current finish. Be careful of the grease that is embedded in the finish as it might cause problems in the future. If it can be cleaned just prime and paint. If the old finish in the cabinets looks all right and does not come off with your finger nails then just paint. If it comes off then you have to strip it especially if is easily removes around the knobs and handles. If the cabinet doors have thin veneer, which is coming off and is cracking then you probably cannot refurbish them. Even if you take it off chances are there will be nothing of value left thereafter. Do try do probably someone just put it on there to cover some peels, which means there is something useful under it

How to Refurbish Your Kitchen Cabinets - No Sweat

If you want my opinion I would say consider hiring a kitchen cabinet refacing company to come to your home for an obligation FREE consultation. This way you can have them look at your cabinets to determine their usability and also help you with a few technical stuff on how to refurbish your kitchen cabinets.

Used Lockers

Used lockers are metal storage containers that can be used to store gym clothes, sporting equipment, office wear, all kinds of personal items, or, in the case of heavy-duty, high-security lockers, personal valuables and/or company documents (but in the latter case, a safe might be a better bet). Used lockers are reasonably priced and are not just for schools and students. They are great to use around the home or summer camp. Used lockers come in all shapes and sized and are made using different materials including the traditional metal lockers. You will find many used metal lockers for sale online at locker company sites and other sites like http://www.ebay.com.

Lockers are found in schools, work, gyms, etc. Often times schools and gyms replace lockers every few years. Many locker companies will refurbish these lockers and put them up for sale. The prices are far cheaper than buying new lockers, and you can hardly tell the difference. Used lockers are great for the home because you can store almost anything in them from household cleaning products (keeping them away from the kids) to storing valuables including papers or collectibles.

Refurbish

Depending on the design, you can keep your locker in the basement or in your bedroom. As noted, used lockers can be purchased in all shapes, sizes, colors and designs, and because they are refurbished, they look brand new. You can even find used wooden lockers that will look great in a bedroom, and will conveniently store materials that need to stay dry like important personal records.

Easy Ways For People to Conserve Natural Resources

There are many ways a person can conserve their natural resources. All you have to do is look around and see what natural resources you use, and find out ways to limit their usage. Many people use natural gas to heat their water and their home. You yourself can monitor how much you are using this resource to minimize its usage.

Getting a tank-less water heater would greatly reduce the usage of natural gases. Another way you could save on natural gas is by the use of another energy source to bring heat to your home. Hydro, solar or wind power are all healthy alternatives to conserving our natural resources.

Fossil

All of those alternatives energy sources have a lot in common with each other. For instance, all three of those energy sources are clean and healthy for the environment. They do not emit harmful gases or toxins into our atmosphere unlike burning fossil fuels. They also are very renewable and are not easy to deplete.

Easy Ways For People to Conserve Natural Resources

What solar power is, is the collection of the sun's rays by use of a solar panel. The energy collected from this panel can be converted into a usable energy like electricity. Wind power follows the same concept as solar power. By the use of large wind turbines energy can be generated by the wind constantly blowing and moving these large turbines.

Many people today are finding this to be a great way to conserve our natural resources. Another option you have before you is Hydro-power. Electricity can be generated through the use of hydro-power by the flow of water at a dam spinning large turbines in the same way that wind power is generated. These are all great ways to conserve our natural resources like fossil fuels and others by the use of clean and renewable energy sources.

We as a planet also have a problem with wasting paper products that come from the forests of the world. By the flippant way we view paper products, we have now increased the demand for more and more lumber. This means that more trees will have to be cut down because of how wasteful we are. There is a way to conserve this natural resource and that can be found in recycling.

Many products come from trees like paper plates, sheets of paper, cups, and envelopes. If we recycle these already used paper products, we will decrease the number of trees cut down a year. Buying these recycled paper products however is also essential for this to actually work. Make the most use out of paper products you have without being wasteful, and then recycle them.

Another large problem we have today is the mass consumption and use of fossil fuels across the world. These nasty fumes are generally emitted from motor vehicles running on gasoline. Fossil fuels will not last forever, oil will eventually run out if we do not conserve it for the planet, and future generations.

A healthy alternative for this is using a hybrid car. Some of these cars will run on electricity combined with using small amounts of gas. Some hybrid cars just run on electricity. Either way it is a great way to conserve our natural when it is concerning fossil fuels.

Allosaurus Facts

Allosaurus was a carnivorous (meat eating) dinosaur that lived during the late Jurassic period and early Cretaceous period, between approximately 154 million and 135 million years ago. It was a very large animal - adults may have grown up to 39 feet (12 meters) long, and could have weighed nearly 2 tons.

Fossils of Allosaurus have been found in North America, Africa and Australia, and in some areas at least, it seems to have been quite a common carnivore. The very first fossil of Allosaurus that was found was, at first, incorrectly described as a "petrified horse hoof", and it was only later, with the benefit of hindsight, and after other fossils had been found, that it was realized that this fossil was in fact the caudal vertebra (tail bone) of a dinosaur! Othniel C. Marsh, one of the great fossil hunters of the 19th century, published the first description of Allosaurus in 1877.

Fossil

Today there is some debate about Allosaurus' lifestyle. Some scientists believe that Allosaurus may have been too large and heavy to chase down prey, and therefore probably got most of its meat by scavenging (for example, scavenging the carcasses of animals killed by other carnivorous dinosaurs). Other scientists however have formed that view that, despite its large size, Allosaurus might actually have been surprisingly agile and could perhaps even have hunted in packs. Scientists of the later view therefore believe that it was quite possible for Allosaurus to be able to bring down large herbivorous sauropod dinosaurs such as Apatosaurus (also known as Brontosaurus) and Diplodocus.

Massospondylus Facts

Massospondylus was a most unusual dinosaur. It was a plant eater that lived in Southern Africa and North America during the late Triassic period, between approximately 208 million and 204 million years ago. The things that make it unusual are the shape of its body and limbs:

* It had a tiny head on the end of a very long and extremely flexible neck

Fossil

* Each of its hands had five fingers, and its thumbs were equipped with a large claw. The design of its arms meant that they could used both for walking and grasping.

Massospondylus Facts

Massospondylus was about 13 feet (4 meters) long. The first fossils of the animal were found in the 19th century, and the name was chosen by Sir Richard Owen (who also coined the word "dinosaur"). Massospondylus means "massive vertebra", and refers to the bones of the animal's neck.

Like many modern birds, Massospondylus is believed to have swallowed stones (known as "gizzard stones") to help in grinding up and digesting plant matter. When the stones had been worn smooth, Massospondylus would regurgitate them, and then swallow new stones. Evidence for this behavior, namely piles of polished stones known as "gastroliths" have been found in Massospondylus skeletons.

As well as fossil skeletons and gastroliths, the fossilized eggs of Massospondylus have also been found. Six eggs were found in South Africa in the 1970s. These eggs were opened many years later, and found to have found near-hatchlings. It has been noted that the young of Massospondylus apparently would have been born without teeth, and based on this, scientists have conjectured that adult Massospondylus probably cared for their young.
